Academic tradition believed in the existence of a perfect body subject to strict proportions that could be determined mathematically. The ideal models were the search for similarity with the reflex divinity of the body of Christ and the statues of the heroes and gods of Antiquity. Models have changed over several centuries but their absurd and impoverishing tyranny for real women and men has remained.
